Voice Notes return to X Chat

X, formerly known as Twitter, has brought back Voice Notes to its direct messaging system, allowing users to share audio messages within X Chat once again. The social network announced the feature's return late on Wednesday, marking the reinstatement of a popular capability that had been absent since the platform's major overhaul late last year.

The functionality works identically in both one-on-one conversations and group chats. Users can activate recording by pressing the voice input icon positioned to the right of the chat's text box. At launch, the default behavior requires users to continue holding the button while recording, though X has implemented a quality-of-life improvement: a press-and-hold gesture followed by a swipe upward enables hands-free recording without needing to maintain finger contact with the button.

Competitive positioning and user retention

The reintroduction of Voice Notes positions X Chat more favorably against rival messaging applications, where audio messaging has long been a standard feature. WhatsApp, Telegram, and Facebook Messenger have offered voice message capabilities for years, and the absence of such functionality in X Chat put the platform at a competitive disadvantage since its November overhaul.

The timing of this release carries additional significance given X Chat's recent spinout as a stand-alone application. The company has been testing an X Chat app on iOS that provides access to the upgraded direct messaging features, and the inclusion of Voice Notes helps make the standalone product more viable as a competitor in the crowded messaging space.

X Money, the company's payments service, is also being tested as a distinct application rather than being integrated solely within the main X platform.
